Four of New York’s Elite High School Teams to Compete
[New York] January 13, 2010 – SNY, the television home of the New York Mets, Jets and BIG EAST Conference, today announced that the 2010 SNY Invitational presented by MetroPCS will tip off January 29 at 6pm and showcase four of the top ranked high school teams in New York. The teams include Long Island Lutheran, Cardozo, Rice and Boys and Girls High School. All games will be broadcast live on SNY and feature SNY commentator Kevin Burkhardt calling all the action alongside analysts and former Villanova Wildcats basketball players John Celestand and Baker Dunleavy. Brian Custer, host of The WheelHouse and Jets Post Game Live on SNY, will handle the sideline duties.
The SNY Invitational presented by MetroPCS was established in January 2008 with the goal of creating an annual high school basketball tournament that will be both a pillar of SNY’s involvement in the community as well as New York’s elite high school basketball event. Throughout the two-day tournament, SNY will provide exposure to the schools and students by televising the games as well as producing multiple vignettes and human interest pieces about the individual schools and their teams. In addition, SNY and MetroPCS will make donations totaling more than $70,000 in scholarships and funds to the participating schools.
The 2010 SNY Invitational will take place at Long Island University’s Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center – which features a 17,000 square-foot basketball arena. MetroPCS will serve as the presenting sponsor of the tournament. Other official sponsors of the event include Time Warner Cable, Spalding, McDonald’s, Toyota, New York Daily News, Nets, New York Jets, WPIX, New York’s 529 Plan, 2K Sports and Lexus Platinum Dealers.
In addition to celebrating the excellence of New York City basketball, the games will showcase some of NYC’s best high school players. SNY.tv’s basketball Insider Adam Zagoria – and his popular ZagsBlog.com – lists below some notable players to watch in this year’s SNY Invitational:
►Boys & Girls High School
Mike Taylor, 2011: The 6-6 junior shooting guard from Boys & Girls holds offers of interest from Pittsburgh, St. John’s, Maryland, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Indiana and Rutgers. Hit the game-winning 3-pointer in last year’s SNY Invitational consolation game against Thomas Jefferson.
Leroy Isler, 2010: A 6-5 senior from Boys & Girls, Isler is an active wing player with several Northeastern Conference offers.
►Cardozo
Ryan Rhoomes, 2010: A 6-8 post player who has shown improvement – Rhoomes has interest from West Virginia, St. John’s, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati and Providence.
Renaldo “Junior” Walters, 2010: A 5-9 senior guard – also the QB for the Cardozo football team – Walters has committed to Norfolk State.
►Long Island Lutheran
Achraf Yacoubou, 2011: An extremely quick 6-4 junior guard who plays both ends of the floor, Yacoubou has committed to Villanova.
Mike Florin, 2011: A 5-11 junior point guard, Florin had 16 points and 10 assists in a December win over St. Dominic’s.
►Rice
Kadeem Jack, 2010: A mobile, tough and strong 6-8 senior, Jack holds offers from St. John’s, Seton Hall, Florida and Arizona. Florida International coach Isiah Thomas has also been calling.
Shane Southwell, 2010: At 6-6, the senior wing is a large guard who can see over the defense, and he makes his teammates better. Southwell committed to Kansas State.
Jermaine Sanders, 2011: A 6-5 junior wing, Sanders is a very strong 3-point shooter whom Villanova coach Jay Wright has already come to visit. Several other Big East schools are on his trail.
